An Overview of Social and Emotional Learning

Broadly speaking, social and emotional learning (SEL) is defined as “a set of skills that individuals need to succeed in schooling, the workplace, relationships, and citizenships. In other words, SEL refers to managing one’s emotions and engaging with people in a positive and healthy manner. A sizeable body of research has found that social and emotional competence is critical for academic performance, student well-being, and life success.  This resource demonstrates the many ways SEL impacts students across their lifespan. Additionally, it provides guidance in implementing the components, research has found to enhance the effectiveness of SEL, programming and increase the likelihood of building students’ social-emotional skills.
